SPIN Created and Performed by evalyn parry Directed by Ruth Madoc-Jones Innovative, award-winning Toronto artist evalyn parry takes her audience on an uncommon theatrical and musical journey in SPIN, her tour-de-force performance celebrating the Bicycle as muse, musical instrument and agent of social change. Inspired in part by the incredible true tale of Annie Londonderry – the first woman to ride around the world on a bicycle in 1894 – parry spins a web of stories which travel from 19th century women’s emancipation to 21st century consumer culture, peeling back layers of history to ultimately reveal a profoundly contemporary and personal heart to her performance.

Parry’s “co-star” is a vintage bicycle: suspended in a mechanic’s stand on stage and connected to a variety of electronic effects pedals, the bike is played – from fenders to spokes to bells – by percussionist Brad Hart, conjuring an astonishing and unique sonic accompaniment to parry’s songs and monologues. Projections by award-winning designer Beth Kates add a captivating visual layer to SPIN, which sold out the run of its premiere in Toronto in 2011. In Case We Disappear I was thinking about the fact that someday, I will disappear, and how I wanted my little brother to remember me remember us. I was inspired to create this show, made up of kooky, embarrassing stories about love, growing up, family, death, and what we're left with when people leave, told through a mix of spoken word, a capella music and comedic sketch. Think of it as a love letter to someone you love, who will, like all of us, someday vanish.

Whimsical and entertaining, multidisciplinary artist Vanessa Smythe’s solo show is “an emotional and spellbinding combination of storytelling, stand-up comedy, poetry and song – all at the same time” (NOW Magazine). In Case We Disappear blends stories of accidental booty calls and forced family hugs in what becomes a theatrical love letter to all the people who vanish. Reminiscent of Flight of the Conchords, Smythe is “able to quickly tack between the humour in everyday minutia, and grand, heartfelt observations about big life questions.” (Jordan Bimm, NOW Magazine). TIM HECKER Love Streams Few in the field of explorative ambient music have remained as questing and unclassifiable as Canadian composer Tim Hecker. Across his 15-year career he has moved through shades of reflective electronic noise, experiential sound design, and modern composition with a deft and distinguished touch. Even so, the past few years have seen a minor renaissance in his discography – time seems to be fortifying his palette, rather than fossilising it. Hecker’s newest opus, Love Streams, takes as its cue from the avant-classical orchestration and extreme electronic processing of his previous full-length, 2013’s Virgins, but shaped into more melancholic, ultraviolet hues.

Its power accrues as it unfolds. Inspired by notions of 15th century choral scores transposed to an artificial intelligence-era language of digital resonance and bright synths, the album was assembled gradually, with layers of studio-tracked keyboards, choir and woodwinds being woven into the mix, then molded and disfigured through complex programming. The effect is similar to hearing some ancient strain of sacred music corrupted by encryption. Hecker admits to thinking about ideas like “liturgical aesthetics after Yeezus” and the “transcendental voice in the age of auto-tune” during its creation. As is true of most of Hecker’s work, Love Streams is a decidedly opaque creation, offering itself as a mutable vessel of meaning. The tangible clues are few. Beyond the titles, there is also the artwork: a gauzy screengrab of a video of an 80-strong Chinese choir collapsing beneath the stage during in an event last summer.

There were no casualties, fortunately, but the image of a congregation united in utopian song suddenly plummeting into the depths is richly metaphorical: no matter how real the Dream, we all feel the Fall. A small handful of the 15th century choral works by Josquin des Prez birthed the foundations of Love Streams. The musical tradition of cyclic, sacred composition developed and thrived for centuries before eroding under the grinding impatience of modernity. Now we stream more than we love. The current reality is that music too frequently resembles a product, or white noise. Tim Hecker belongs to a select camp actively resisting this undertow, this reduction in significance.

His albums are personal statements and gestures of devotion. They are attempts to elevate – even with the stage poised to collapse. Four blood brothers creating infectiously catchy rock n roll laden with synth textures, dynamic rhythms, contemplative lyricism and luscious guitars. That’s the genius of Saskatoon’s post-pop rockers Foam Lake.

Equally at home with swirling keyboard tones as jagged driven guitars, they far exceed the sum of their individual parts. Comprehending the importance of maximizing their dynamic range, their debut full-length Force and Matter swings from absolute thunder to quiet whisper at the drop of a hat, while smartly abandoning frivolous embellishment and instead delivering only exactly enough of what is needed. Musical kinships like this don’t come around often anymore – listen up while you can. (Tyler Stewart). With her third album, The Details, Mo Kenney traces her own strange, devastating, and ultimately hopeful trip through the trials and tribulations of booze-fuelled breakdowns, clouds of depression, and disintegrating relationships. On each of its 14 tracks, she unflinchingly confronts her annihilation and eventual redemption, leaving nothing out. The concept album is her most personal and cohesive work to date—combining elements of bruising rock ’n’ roll, vivid psychedelia, and haunting, left-of-the-dial pop, Kenney navigates the darkest waters in her life with self-deprecation, genuine soul-baring, and typical black humour. It opens with a calm before the storm as the eerie sadness of “Cat’s Not a Cake”—about splitting a beloved pet in half as a relationship falls apart—provides a deceptively gentle beginning to a ride that swiftly steers into self-destruction. Following up with the off-the-rails overdrive of “On The Roof,” The Details explodes out of the gate, finding Kenney unable to escape the dangerous spiral she finds herself in.

Before and during writing the album, Kenney was en route to rock bottom: depressed with dark blues and drinking like a fish, unable to hold herself or her relationships together, alienating the people she loves, and living hell-bent on oblivion. She comes to terms with her own toxic behaviour while channeling the late Elliott Smith through spectral atmospheres on “June 3rd.” With “Maybe I Am”—a reverb-soaked tune that turns to punchy guitar riffs—she realizes in the midst of trying to hook up with someone that she can’t interact with humans properly. The hazy, laid back calm of “Counting” finds her worried she’s fallen so far into despair that she’s losing her mind. And the vicious, rollicking “If You’re Not Dead” shows her playing warped mind games over feral guitar solos and biting hooks. Somewhere along the way, Kenney finds herself dazed and broken in a place that not many people find their way back from. “Unglued,” with its breezy sway, is likely the most summery song put to tape about being fed up with your own messy self. “I Can’t Wait” recalls the gauzy dreamscapes of Yo La Tengo with a hushed and grateful understanding that as bad as things are, it’s not the end of the world.

But it’s not necessarily smooth sailing from there, as Kenney struggles to stay optimistic with “Lights Out,” and sings about getting clocked in the face at a bar by some meathead during “Punchy.” Still, she can’t help but find the hilarity in getting slugged, slyly laughing through her bloody teeth the whole time. Finally, she arrives in less troubled seas, closing softly on the sparse, clear-minded “Feelin’ Good.” The storms weathered to get there may be the kind that leave lasting scars (or at least a few post-bar stitches), but with clear skies on the horizon, Kenney wears those scars as a reminder of what she’s been through, and the kind of seasons in hell she’s capable of enduring. Her latest is a record of all those storms and the routes and detours and trials of pushing through them while keeping her sense of humour gracefully intact.

By turns rowdy, reflective, brave, funny, and deeply honest, it signals an already accomplished songwriter coming fully and completely into her own as an artist. Produced by Mo Kenney and Joel Plaskett, The Details vividly documents Kenney’s fight to survive her own worst enemy—herself. Too Soon Monsoon Too Soon Monsoon, an alternative pop duo based out of Saskatoon, SK, formed during the final days of summer 2016. Greg Torwalt (keys and vocals) had posted a “bandmate wanted” ad online to which Nathan Henry (drums) was quick to respond. After sharing songs ideas and drum tracks, the duo decided to meet in Nathan’s garage for their first official jam.

Thankfully, the first session exceeded expectations and the duo avoided becoming another example of why you should not meet strangers from the internet. Heavy Bell is a duo made up of Royal Canoe frontman Matt Peters and actor/singer-songwriter Tom Keenan.

Previous projects include the music for the stage productions of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale and Richard II. By Grand Central Station is a song cycle based on Elizabeth Smart’s novel By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept. Originally published in 1945, the book has been called “one of the half-dozen masterpieces of poetic prose in the world.” It is based on events in Smart’s own life, who as a young woman fell deeply in love with a married man, and contrived to bear his child. The story is told through emotion rather than action: her inner world is enormous, tempestuous. It takes over the world around her and tosses her like a boat on the sea. This album is a paean to the novel: a song of praise and triumph.

We were struck so deeply by its incredible words that we had to set them to music. We chose passages that provide an impressionistic view of the woman’s inner journey; we let the flow of the words dictate the form of the songs, rather than adhering to standard structures. We arranged the songs for a chamber ensemble in order to reflect Smart’s vibrant humanity, and to express a great range of emotion confined to an intimate space. Whereas the initial composition took only a few days, the scoring took place over the next several years, whenever we found time between Matt’s work with Royal Canoe and Tom’s work as an actor and singer-songwriter. At the core of the songs are the unison voices of Matt and Tom.

Surrounding these are piano, guitar, strings, brass, woodwinds, percussion, and a choir. The performers include members of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Begonia, Chic Gamine, Royal Canoe, Slattern, and Imaginary Cities. Two of the tracks feature Elizabeth Smart herself reading passages from her novel. These were recorded almost forty years after she wrote it: a mature woman embodying the joy and pain of her younger self. Her voice reminds the listener where this music came from. Close Talker is the exalted indie rock trio from Saskatoon, Canada. Formed in 2012, the band has made great strides in a short period of time: two releases, numerous tours throughout North America, Europe, and the UK, and international attention from revered and critically acclaimed blogs and publications.

Close Talker is a band born and raised in the Canadian prairies, made up of childhood friends Will Quiring, Matthew Kopperud, and Christopher Morien. Since becoming a trio in the summer of 2015, the band has now honed their craft, creating a more vast and iconic sound that is turning heads and drawing crowds around the world. Close Talker is set to release their latest recording Lens April 21, 2017 through Nevado Music (worldwide) and DevilDuck Records (Europe). The 10 song LP showcases the band’s maturity and poise, while entering new realms of pop sensibility.

Produced by Matt Peters (Royal Canoe, Waking Eyes) and mixed by Marcus Paquin (The National, Arcade Fire, Local Natives), Lens unleashes musical talent and precision without sacrificing the raw energy, homegrown feel, and vulnerability of the band’s acclaimed live show. The more subtle track ‘Afterthought’ received high praise and regular rotation on NPR’s World Cafe, stating the song is “as intimate as it is earnest. It's expansive and as a result, an invitation to lean right in.” While Lens remains an energetic and urgent blend of rhythmically driven grooves and spacious indie rock, the band continues to evolve as one of Canada’s most innovative and, according to Q Magazine, most exciting exports. Over the course of the band's existence, Close Talker has constantly refined their approach to music, composition, and poetry, focusing more on content that pries while still remaining accessible. Writing and recording Lens during the harsh desolate prairie winter lead the band to new depths of creativity while still trusting instincts and simplicity. Lens is to be experienced in a linear, introspective light, as the lyrics illustrate the sober bias (lens) towards one's social life. Loaded with heavy drums, thick keys, and always-special guitars, rivalled only by sincere vocals, the band has now entered a state that forges an earnest expression from every vantage point.

For Close Talker, Lens marks a new chapter: creating music more authentic than ever before. Ever since their inception in 2005, Portland's RED FANG have strived to write heavy, catchy music underlaid with subtle complexities. Founded by David Sullivan, Maurice Bryan Giles, Aaron Beam, and John Sherman, the band had a distinctive and fully-formed sound right from the start: a mix of compelling songwriting and hard rocking euphoria that speaks to the headbanger, the hesher, and the music student alike. The band's two-pronged vocal attack and knack for finding the sharpest hooks made sure that the music world caught on right away. Within just one year of RED FANG's first show, they were opening for genre stalwarts the Melvins and Big Business, and soon began appearing at festivals including FYF, Fun Fun Fun Fest, Sasquatch Fest, and more. After the release of their self-titled debut (Sargent House, 2009), RED FANG signed to independent label Relapse Records for the release of their 2011 full-length Murder the Mountains, which hit #25 on the US Top Heatseekers chart and received widespread critical acclaim. RED FANG followed that record up with a slew of dates worldwide, and two years later, released Whales and Leeches, which put the band on the US Billboard charts (at #66) for the first time and garnered praise from outlets ranging from Spin and Revolver to Stereogum and Alternative Press.

The success of Whales and Leeches even led to a live appearance on 'Late Show with David Letterman' in January 2014. Additionally, RED FANG have gained renown for their inventive comedic music videos directed by Whitey McConnaughy, several of which have become viral hits. The band's videos have received more than 10,000,000 views in total. RED FANG have more than made a name for themselves on the live circuit as well.

Over the years, they've toured with prominent artists such as Mastodon, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Helmet, Opeth and Crowbar, and have appeared at major festivals including Hellfest, Rockstar Mayhem Fest, Wacken, Roadburn, and many others. In their travels, RED FANG have performed across the globe, from North America and South America to Europe, Russia, and Australia.

Now, after three years of vigorously touring the world, the band are ready to return to the stage with their latest and greatest full-length album, Only Ghosts. Produced by the legendary Ross Robinson (At The Drive In, The Cure, Slipknot, and many more) and mixed by Joe Barresi (Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss, Melvins), Only Ghosts consists of 10 new tracks of the band's signature, high-impact, hook-filled, hard rock. RED FANG prove once again they are top-notch songwriters who have mastered the heavy anthem without taking themselves too seriously. Only Ghosts is a rock album of incredible magnitude that demands to be played at maximum volume! RED FANG is: John Sherman - Drums Aaron Beam - Bass, Vocals David Sullivan - Guitar Maurice Bryan Giles - Guitar, Vocals. Shooting Guns Hailing from Saskatoon, SK, in the heart of the Canadian prairies, JUNO and Polaris Prize award nominees Shooting Guns are hard at work fortifying the heavy end of the psychedelic spectrum, haunting the foggy moor between Sabbath-styled doom riffery and heavy pulse-riding kraut-rock.

Shooting Guns scored the soundtrack to Canadian horror-comedy WolfCop and released the Official Soundtrack in 2014 which won the 2015 WCMA Award for Metal/Heavy Recording of the Year. Their sophomore LP, Brotherhood of the Ram, released in 2013 through RidingEasy Records was nominated for the 2015 JUNO Metal/Hard Album of the Year as well as the Polaris Music Prize. Their debut LP, Born To Deal in Magic: 1952-1976, was also nominated for the Polaris Music Prize in 2012.

When Lindi Ortega went in search of some quiet last year, the award-winning artist was pleasantly surprised to find a voice she hadn’t heard in some time – her own. Amid sparse, atmospheric production, it’s precisely this voice – a combination of Ortega’s fatalistic perspective expressed with her evocative soprano – that grips your attention on a brand new EP, Til The Goin’ Gets Gone.

A dogged resilience permeates this unadorned collection – three originals and a cover of Townes Van Zandt’s “Waiting ‘Round To Die.” The songs are the hard-won spoils of an internal war with words that struck after an extended stretch of touring, addressed in the EP’s title track about the detours and ditches that a traveling musician faces. “What A Girl’s Gotta Do,” a song that is the silver lining of an otherwise dreadful date, explores the gritty pragmatism of making ends meet. Alongside the title track, this song offers a second metaphor about artistic life that strengthens the EP’s overall sense of resolve. Ortega’s somber rendition of “Waiting ‘Round to Die,” acknowledges a personal debt – her recent discovery of the legendary songwriter’s music is what finally cured her writer’s block. The closer, “Final Bow,” came when Ortega assumed she only had one song left in her. “I thought I had to quit music but I wanted to leave gracefully,” she says.

“But then I decided to get up and sing some more.” As a whole, this statement captures the essence of Ortega’s new EP – it’s about dusting off, gutting it out, stepping up for another round. Ortega recorded Til The Goin’ Gets Gone in a converted East Nashville manor, where therapy horses linger on the property. Recording with her longtime guitarist James Robertson, Ortega co-produced the set with Jay Tooke and Jason “Rowdy” Cope. The small production team and minimalist instrumentation make an intimate, immediate setting for Ortega’s stark vision of the human condition. Although classic country is an indelible part of her musical history, the EP also sets the tone for the next chapter of her career: “I'll always love Loretta, Dolly and Patsy. But I just want more space. I want more ambience.” Ortega’s guitar-playing chops and innate country music instincts put her in an elite group of artists; she has earned an unusually inclusive type of success with both indie cred and mainstream country recognition.

From supporting Carrie Underwood on the CMA Awards to her opening slot on Chris Stapleton’s recent Canadian arena tour, Ortega is a sought-after and unique personality in Nashville’s music community and beyond. Taylor Jade The music of Taylor Jade has been called enigmatic. Stoic and melancholy lyricism, juxtaposed against light and airy acoustic guitar melodies. Appealing to a wide fan base, from contemporary music educators to street punk rockers, Taylor's music reminds the listener of both the beauty and temporary nature of the human condition. Vulnerable, deep, and very authentic, her music expresses a listenable sojourn into loss, challenge, and introspection.

Taylor's stage presence has been called unassuming, contrasting the beauty of her music with a certain charming self-depreciation, inviting the audience not only to listen, but also to participate in the vulnerability of the moment. Leaving her audience moved, and potentially, a little in love with the girl. Today Is The Day reigns as one of the most influential bands of the past two decades.

Ten studio albums have been released on such labels as Amphetamine Reptile, Relapse, and Southern Lord -- including modern-day classics like Willpower, Temple of the Morning Star, and In the Eyes of God.

The band's lineup has included such musicians as Brann Dailor and Bill Kelliher, who would later go on to form Mastodon. Today Is The Day has toured the world with Motorhead, Helmet, The Melvins, Morbid Angel, Converge, Napalm Death, Neurosis, Eyehategod, Unsane, Coalesce, and many more. Steve Austin has made a name for himself as a producer, helping create seminal albums for Lamb Of God, Converge, Deadguy, among others. Duchess Says Duchess Says was created in late 2003 by four influent members of the Church of Budgerigars who decided to collaborate together in a common musical project. Their goal was to insure a faithful representation of the message of the Duchess (or spiritual budgie) through a precise artistic dialog. Composed of A-Claude (vox, keytar, guitar), Ismael (keyboard, guitar), Phil (guitar, bass, feedbacks) and Simon Says (lo-fi beats, drums and doubtful noises).

Duchess Says is serving us a repertory of 'moog rock' songs strong in images and enormoustly intense live performances!Their musical influences range from no wave, new wave, punk, to cinema and visual arts. If you pay attention, you could see them perform in the most unusual places such as golf courses, shop windows, vacant building sites etc. Duchess Says has the mandate to decontextualise the rock and to promote simultaneously their Church on the way.

For decades Tom carved out a life for himself in shadows. He built an international music career and became a father, he battled demons and addiction, and he waited, hoping for the lies to cease and the truth to emerge.

And when it did, it would sweep up the St. Lawrence River to the Mohawk reserves of Quebec, on to the heights of the Manhattan skyline. With a rare gift for storytelling and an astonishing story to tell, Tom writes with unflinching honesty and extraordinary compassion about his search for the truth. It's a story about scars, about the ones that hurt us, and the ones that make us who we are. Come share in a special evening of songs and stories with Tom Wilson.

Tom Wilson/Lee Harvey Osmond, is a Canadian music legend, famed storyteller and visual artist. With over 40 years under his belt, his extensive career and tireless efforts as a musician has bestowed upon him numerous nominations and awards from the Hamilton Music Awards to the Polaris Prize to the Juno Awards, including certified gold and platinum records from his work with popular rock band Junkhouse. Tom Wilson's songwriting has seen his works recorded by and with artists such as; Sarah McLachlan, City and Colour, Jason Isbell, Colin James, Lucinda Williams, Billy Ray Cyrus, Mavis Staples, The Rankin Family, as well as his own bands Junkhouse, and Canadian treasure, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. Wilson’s memoir, Beautiful Scars will be released November 2017 through Penguin/Random House. The title doesn’t quite say it all, but it says most of it: A Life Unto Itself is as much the name of Steve Von Till’s fourth solo album as it is the perfect description for the 25-plus years he’s spent forging, with his brothers, the incomparable musical force that is Neurosis—not to mention the numerous sonic tapestries he’s woven with Tribes Of Neurot and under his alter ego Harvestman.

You can hear that deep musical history, and all the life experience that goes with it, on A Life Unto Itself. As with his previous solo works, it’s Von Till’s weathered, distinctive voice and sparse acoustic guitar that provide the foundation. Though mostly quiet and subdued, these songs still manage to evoke vast emotional power as Von Till’s raspy whisper dives deeply inward and speaks of visions, memories, and self-reflection in a way that feels both seasoned and exposed. While his last couple of albums took on a more traditional approach with respectful nods toward Americana and Celtic ballads, A Life Unto Itself ventures into a wider variety of sonic landscapes, often borrowing from the rural psychedelia Von Till is known for creating with Harvestman, weaving vintage synth and electric guitars in and out of these unique folksongs. The songs are informed by a worldview that attempts to peer beyond the veil of the physical world and recognize the symbols and messages that often go unnoticed.

““When you make a big life decision and then you hear a raven’s call out in the sky, it wasn’t chance—it was an affirmation, it was meant for you, even if that might seem ridiculous in a conventional sense,” Von Till offers by way of example. “When you hear a melody and it takes you back a thousand years to a memory you’re not even sure you were a part of. When folklore and history become ways of how you see the world, it allows things to become more mystical and take on deeper meaning. When you’re walking through ordinary, mundane situations, you have this frame of reference that takes on great personal significance beyond surviving the day-to-day: It’s surviving the day-to-day with meaning.” — J. Bennett, 2015. On one end of the spectrum there are varieties of the Begonia which can be a dark, grievous, rough around the edges.

And on the other end, a petite and elegant flower. In between, the plant attempts to harmonize its two poles, forming an array of varieties that each borrow from the delicate and the unseemly. It is in this same vein that Begonia (Alexa Dirks) finds herself, trying to find a balance. Known for her voice in the Juno Award winning harmony driven group Chic Gamine, Dirks has a timbre that recalls the golden age of soul, proud and courageous. And yet it still returns to the ground, finding a quietness, a hesitant intimacy. Joined in studio by producers Matt Schellenberg (Royal Canoe) and Matt Peters (Royal Canoe, Close Talker), the collection of songs that forms Begonia’s Lady In Mind lets the extremes of Dirks’ past and present coalesce into a sound that is both battle hymn and breakbeat body mover, incorporating themes which are confident in and of themselves, and yet sometimes caught in the middle.

Jen Lane Sometimes fate or destiny lets you know when you’re in the right place at the right time, doing what you’re supposed to be doing. Over the past eight years, Saskatoon-based recording artist Jen Lane has shown that the trials and tribulations she endured during that time have led to the creation of what is thus far her most personal, compelling and powerfully evocative album. This Life of Mine, her 5th studio album, is the culmination of a time in Lane’s personal and creative life that can truly be described as a roller coaster ride that began after she was sidelined with a foot and ankle injury that took several years and multiple surgeries to repair. With her first two releases, Sleepless (1999) and Injection (2002) Lane garnered a lot of attention within the Western Canadian music scene.

Sleepless was nominated for a Prairie Music Award, when Lane was just 16. Her self-titled 2006 album and the 2010 follow-up, For the Night, were both nominated for Western Canadian Music Awards and Jen received many notable showcases across the country and into the US including 3 trips to SXSW. Halfway between LA and Phoenix on a desolate stretch of I-10 lies Desert Center, a mostly abandoned town that mainly serves as a gas stop along the barren interior of California. Portland punks Guantanamo Baywatch, like so many touring bands, have passed through the town countless times on their way between shows. But the town has also become a particular source of inspiration for guitarist/vocalist Jason Powell, who recently relocated from Oregon to Arizona. It may seem ironic that a band that draws so heavily from surf rock would find their muse in a location so far from the beach, but it’s not as if The Ventures were hitting the waves in their hometown of Tacoma or Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet were waxing their boards in Toronto.

Truth is, Desert Center was the place where Powell first farted in front of his girlfriend, resulting in their use of “desert centering” as code for passing gas. But Guantanamo Baywatch’s new album Desert Center isn’t an ode to bodily functions or breaking down comfort barriers within relationships. Rather, it’s a perfect reminder of the ecstatic rabble-rousing documentation of life in America’s lonely outposts offered up by that first wave of electric guitar pioneers. A notorious homebody, Chad VanGaalen is well known for rarely leaving his rickety house in Calgary, endlessly drawing, recording and making art. With Diaper Island, VanGaalen distills his approach, producing his most sonically cohesive album to date, and the closest thing he has done to a rock album. Also a celebrated visual artist, VanGaalen is widely renowned for his illustration and animation work.

As with his previous albums – Infiniheart, Skelliconnection and the Polaris short-listed Soft Airplane, VanGaalen illustrated all of the art for Diaper Island – and is in the midst of animating a music video as well. He has animated music videos for folks like J Mascis, Guster, and Holy Fuck, and his videos have been collectively viewed well over a million times on YouTube. VanGaalen has been quietly building a catalogue of songs that invite listeners to gently explore his distinctive creativity. Diaper Island extends the adventure into deeper territory, tapping into VanGaalen's lifeblood and mining the richness of his mind with sharper tools. Just the name 'Abbey Road' makes you think of another time. A time when music mattered.

These days new music doesn't survive. It's gone by lunch. 'Abbey Road' saw the Beatles let go. It was their swan song album.

They wanted to make something that would last and end their legacy with grace and cool. No other album picks up a full head of steam like 'Abbey Road.' Despite their splitting up, the lads beckon us to 'Come Together' right from the onset. And they crescendo and say goodbye with kiss of philosophy that not only stands the test of time, but tattoos itself onto our hearts: 'And in the end, the love you take, is equal to the love you make'.

They were still young men when they created 'Abbey Road.' We've all read about some of the infighting and disagreements. Ten years together within a golden cage of idolatry, you're bound to have some conflict. And yet they still leant themselves so lovingly to each other's songs.

That defines character. When Classic Albums Live performs 'Abbey Road,' we go deeper than just playing it note for note and cut for cut. We've had that part down for years.

We go into the album and fuse our DNA with it. There's a beauty that needs to accompany every performance of 'Abbey Road.' I can say without reservation - that Classic Albums Live has found that beauty and takes the greatest pride in sharing it with everyone at the show. Intermission after the album - followed by a best of the Beatles 2nd set. Proudly presented by Ghostfinger Productions Visuals by VJ Photon. Just for the record, you could easily be staring a Serena Ryder triple album in the face right now.

Just as she did for the last record, the prolific Ryder amassed something like 65 or 70 songs during the run-up to UTOPIA. The challenge wasn’t coming up with new material; the challenge was whittling it all down to fit an album-sized package. Ryder even briefly toyed with releasing her own equivalent of the Clash’s Sandinista! Or George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass – a triple LP composed of songs that she envisioned divided amongst moods of “light,” “dark” and the “grey” area in between. Serena Ryder does what she does naturally and effortlessly, cut her first record at 16 and was a major-label artist with a gold-selling album, 2006’s If Your Memory Serves You Well and a gold-selling single, “Weak in the Knees,” all before she’d turned 25. And yet it took a debilitating bout with depression and artistic self-doubt brought on by her premature pigeonholing as just another “sensitive Canadian folk chick with an acoustic guitar” for her to finally let it all come out truly naturally and effortlessly on Harmony, the album where Ryder found her voice and discovered that the best formula for her success is no formula at all. You can still hear the results of the “letting go” that allowed Harmony – a genre-oblivious sleeper hit that went on to notch platinum sales in Ryder’s native Canada – to happen living and breathing on the radio to this day, since that record’s signature single, “Stompa” (triple- platinum and counting north of the 49th parallel), and its anthemic follow-up, “What I Wouldn’t Do,” haven’t left the airwaves since.

“So many people, when they put out a record, it’s all dark or it’s all light and happy. But on this record there’s a lot of juxtaposition of both those things – the light and the dark. I was wondering what if you married the two. I wanted to write an album that had some sense of balance. But I have no fucking idea if it happened.” Find thematic threads where you will, then.

UTOPIA is a collection of winning songs written on the fly in Los Angeles, London, Nashville, Los Angeles and Toronto. “I don’t have a set-in-stone identity when it comes to being a musician. It’s a mystery, even to me; a good one. It’s nice to be able to live within that mystery.” We’re excited to present Serena in the intimate space of 3rd Avenue United Church.

With it’s excellent acoustics and beautiful architecture, this is a show not to be missed! The album was recorded in New Orleans, and it’s Josh's most freewheeling and rollicking record to date. Here’s how Josh himself describes it: “I wanted to make something grand.

I wanted it to swing hard. I wanted my monster to run. I wanted to sing songs that I had written in stretches of frenzy. I wanted to fall in love with every note.

I wanted to hold each one and let it slip away like ribbon through the hands. I wanted to make something important to me and to no one else. I wanted it like I’ve never wanted anything in my life. I wanted it because life is short and I wouldn’t want to leave it without giving it all of my love.

I wanted to play in a beautiful studio all day and walk home at night through the ghosty wedding cake houses of the Garden District dark. I wanted to play messianic oracular honky-tonk.

Mama says that I was born hungry, but I woke up one morning not long ago and found that I was ravenous.” Over the course of his acclaimed career, Josh Ritter has released seven full-length albums, including The Beast In Its Tracks, So Runs the World Away, and The Animal Years. Of the latter, novelist Stephen King named it his album of the year, calling it “the most exuberant outburst of imagery since Bob Dylan’s ‘A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall,’ in 1963.”.

Alan Doyle chalks up a lot of where is he right now—with both his third solo album and his second book released in October 2017—to luck. “I’m the luckiest guy I’ve ever even heard of,” he says.

“This was all I ever wanted, a life in the music business, singing concerts. I was lucky to be born in the family I was, in Petty Harbour. I was lucky that Sean, Bob and Darrell found me and asked me to join their band. I was lucky the Canadian music fans were into it.” And yet, one listen to A Week at The Warehouse makes it plainly clear that there’s a lot more than luck at play in this decades long, awards-studded career.

This album, recorded live off the floor with Doyle’s “beautiful band,” as he calls them, with producer Bob Rock at the helm, is chock-a-block with country-tinged, radio ready tunes that bring with them the flavour of some of Doyle’s favourite artists, from John Mellencamp to Rock’s own band, Payolas (In fact, Doyle covers a Payolas tune on this album, Forever Light Will Shine, with that band’s singer, Paul Hyde appearing as a guest vocalist.) “I still think of myself as a person that has one job, a guy who plays in a band for a living, that’s me. If someone asks me to write songs, I guess I’m a songwriter too. If someone asks me to produce a record for them, then I guess I’m a record producer too. I never looked for an acting job in my life—they come to me. Someone calls who needs a hairy, Irish-looking fellow to bully someone or play the lute, come throw rocks at Colin Farrell, okay, sounds fun. It’s a laugh.

Books came to me the same way, Random House said, we’ve been reading your blog, why not write a book, so I thought okay!” There’s more to it than all of that, for certain, but Doyle parries it off, in his usual way. “I’m grateful to do all of it. It’s a wonderful life and I’m very lucky to have it.”.

Earthtones is the newest and totally most best album yet from Bahamas, aka me, Afie Jurvanen. I wasn't feeling too inspired in 2016. I’d been in a seemingly unbroken cycle of recording and touring for 6 years. I know, you're saying to yourself 'that's so clichė, all musicians complain about being tired.' But wait, there's more! Not knowing exactly what type of album to make, I was feeling pretty low. But at that very moment, my longtime manager and confidante Robbie Lackritz called and said 'dude, you should make an album with D'angelo's rhythm section.'

And just like that, the juices were flowing and the songs started coming. I wrote songs about having success, having kids, and having depression.

I wrote songs about going on tour, going back in time and going in circles. I wrote songs about my other worldly wife, my jerk dad and my garbage relationship with my brother. Crazy right?! In Sept of 2016 I flew to Los Angeles and spent three days in the studio with the bass boss Pino Palladino and the titan of time keeping, Mr. James Gadson. No rehearsals, no charts, no rules.

We worked fast and came away with 10 songs that sounded fresh and strange and warm and free of any genre. The results were so inspiring to me that I quickly pulled my road band (Felicity Williams, Christine Bougie, Darcy Yates, Jason Tait, Don Kerr) into a Prague studio to record a few more songs. And here's the best part.the whole thing is produced by my longtime producer and confidante Robbie Lackritz, so you know the sound is correct, totally modern and completely familiar at the same time.

Sincerely, Afie Jurvanen. THE WEATHER STATION The Weather Station is the fourth — and most forthright — album by The Weather Station, the project of Toronto songwriter Tamara Lindeman. Her most fully realized statement to date, it is a work of profound urgency, artistic generosity, and joy. Self-titled and self-produced, the album unearths a vital new energy from Lindeman’s acclaimed songwriting practice, marrying it to a bold new sense of confidence. “I wanted to make a rock and roll record,” Lindeman explains, “but one that sounded how I wanted it to sound, which of course is nothing like rock and roll.” The result is a spirited, frequently topical tour de force that declares its understated feminist politics, and its ambitious new sonic directions, from its first moments. On past records, Lindeman has been a master of economy.

Here her precisely detailed prose-poem narratives remain as exquisitely wrought as ever, but they inhabit an idiosyncratic, sometimes disorderly, and often daring album that feels, and reads, like a collection of obliquely gut-punching short stories. Her previous album Loyalty was recorded at La Frette Studios in France in the winter of 2014 with Afie Jurvanen (Bahamas) and Robbie Lackritz (Feist). Nominated for the 2015 Polaris Music Prize, it earned praise from The Guardian, Pitchfork, NPR Music, Uncut, and MOJO, among many others, who celebrated its delicate, carefully worded verse, filled with double meanings, ambiguities, complex metaphors, and rich details of the everyday. Lindeman and her band have toured extensively in North America, Europe, Australia, and Japan, both as a headliner and as support for artists such as The War on Drugs, The Mountain Goats, Damien Jurado, Bahamas, and Basia Bulat.

'I've always taken great pleasure in being difficult to categorize,' says the White Buffalo's big-voiced frontman, Jake Smith. Since releasing his first album in 2002, Smith has explored the grey area between genres, carving out a sound rooted in dark folk, countrified soul, cinematic storytelling and roadhouse-worthy rock. He keeps things unclassifiable on the White Buffalo's sixth album, Darkest Darks, Lightest Lights, the most hard-hitting, electrified album of his career.

Although recorded in Smith's hometown of Los Angeles, where he grew up listening to the country twang of George Jones and the pissed-off punk of Bad Religion, Darkest Darks, Lightest Lights looks to the passion and punch of White Buffalo's live shows for inspiration. Smith has been a road warrior for more than a decade, doubling as his own tour manager along the way. Gig after gig, he's built a cult following without a major label's support, boosting his band's international visibility with more than a dozen TV-worthy songs — including the Emmy-nominated 'Come Join the Murder' — that were featured on shows like Sons of Anarchy and Californication. 'I'm kind of an island,' he says proudly. 'We tour on our own and have built our own fanbase, so the idea with this album was to capture that live feel — the passion that we produce in a stage setting — in a studio performance.' Island or not, Darkest Darks, Lightest Lights finds Smith reaching far beyond his own experience for a string of detailed, character-driven songs.

Many of these tunes explore the gloomy, dangerous corners of America, spinning stories of sinners, crooks, bad decisions and broken hearts. On 'Border Town/Bury Me in Baja,' a drug dealer awaits his death at the hands of the Mexican mafia. 'Avalon,' a desperate, driving anthem worthy of Bruce Springsteen, finds its protagonist 'wishing he could flip a switch [and] turn his life around.' 'Nightstalker Blues' — an amped-up blast of harmonica-filled, guitar-fueled roots rock — revolves around the story of serial killer Richard Ramirez, whose murder spree haunted southern California during the mid-Eighties. As the album's own title promises, though, this is a record about balance. A record about life's ups and downs.

'I wanted to hit all the emotional spots,' explains Smith, whose voice — a booming, rumbling baritone, with a slight quaver that can sound ominous one minute and warmhearted the next — takes a tender turn during love songs like 'Observatory' and 'If I Lost My Eyes.' Together, Darkest Darks, Lightest Lights offers up the White Buffalo's strongest material to date, doubling down on Smith's strengths while pushing his sound into new territory.

Stripped-down folk. Electrified swamp-soul. Heartland rock. Bluesy boogie-woogie.

It's all here, tied together by the super-sized vocals and articulate songwriting of a bandleader whose work is sometimes moody, sometimes menacing, but always melodic 'My hope is that this album will touch people,' he says. 'Make people feel. The good, the bad, and the ugly.

The darkest darks, and the lightest lights.' Matthew Barber Multi Juno Award nominee Matthew Barber returns with a new album for 2018. For the past 2 years, Matthew has been touring behind The Family Album, a collaborative album with his sister Jill Barber.
