I am gonna try to answer a few of your questions. First, the difference in 36, 10, 60. A model 36 is a carbon steel 'j' frame (small-frame gun), 5-shot in either blue or nickel. A model 10 is a 'K' (larger) frame, carbon steel 6-shot, and a model 60 is a stainless steel 'j' frame, still a 5-shot, like the 36. I really don't understand the question about pre-wwII serial numbers. I am assuming you are talking about the larger frame m&p (pre model 10). The 'j' frame was introduced in 1950, and a 'J' prefix was added in 1969.

This actually gives us a good clue as to your date-of-shipping. The style of thumblatch you have started in 1967, and your grip style began to be phased in in 1968, so your gun probably shipped in 1969, maybe very late-68. (the 36-1 was introduced in 1967, but it was a 3-inch heavy-barrel gun, and the serial numbers and production ran concurrently with 'regular' (no-dash) model 36s for several years. 75 was a steal!

I don't think i have ever seen one sell for that cheap, even back in the day, or in crappy condition. You done good! Your gun looks great, and should prove to be a fine gun.

Where do you live that you have to register the gun after you have purchased it?

Duckgrinder, Every thing that I told you---NEVERMIND! I was totally on the wrong page.

You have a Chiefs Special model 36 (Unless it says 'Airweight' on the barrel which I cannot see) 'J' frame. Your serial number of 125447 would show a 'Born' date of early 1958.

The serial number 125000 should be the start on model numbers in very late 1957. It should be marked in the yoke (S&W has always called it the yoke, as does Taurus; Colt, Ruger, and Dan Wesson call it the crane). It should say 'MOD. Hoping you can help with my.38 spcl Model 36. Stick around awhile and join in.

I personally guarentee your enjoyment. Your model 36-1 (on yoke) was 'prolly' born in the first half of 1985, March to May is my guess (SWAG). I say probably because when it comes to S&W there are many exceptions, but probably means 90-99% correct. There is a small chance it was born in early 1986, but I am sticking with 1985; But I have been wrong before. 1980-1983 were serial number transition years for S&W.

These years saw the J frames numbered under the old 'J' prefix and the newer combination of the three digit alpha prefix with the four digit numerical serial numbers simultaneously. Jadek, Cute, any description other than flat latch model???

Maybe a call to 'Carnac the Magnificent' will devine the answer. A picture would be great, but without that, how about a description like barrel length, DAO or exposed hammer, hidden hammer? Blue or nickel or something else; what type of grips, walnut, plastic, green? What does it say on the barrel? A J frame with the serial number J604xx was probably manufactured in 1955 (0). Fiearms with the 'J' prefix were all 38 S&W Special Pre models: 36: 38 special 5 shot Chiefs Special 37: 38 special 5 shot Chiefs Special Airweight 38: 38 special Bodyguard Airweight 49: 38 special Bodyguard 50: 38 special Chiefs Special Target As far as value, depending on condition, anywhere from $50.00 for a POS to over $1000.00 for ANIB.

There were not that many made. They made a few in nickel which brings a premium. As M14man told you, it was made in 1982, but its beginning was that S&W made an experimental heavy barrel model 10, 10-6 to be precise in.357. Seeing that the model 10 has traditionally been a.38 special for, at the time, early 70's, over 75 years; S&W did not want to confuse buyers with a.357 38 Special, so they gave it its own model number. This actually corresponding to a fixed sight model 19. Relish your model 13-3. It was discontinued in 1999.

Some day this too will be collectible and value will rise greatly, IMHO.-Phil. I'm no expert at S&W pistols. I can look up stuff related to them. So a picture will help others confirm the model. After the GCA unique serials were required which makes looking up numbers easier.if the companies make them available. Now Smith used only numbers for the first part of the century.

The same serial numbers could appear on 44's, 32's, 38's etc. You may have to do your own research and determine on your own the model. S&W also did not always keep a yearly record, but would block them all in a 5 year period. So getting an exact year may not be possible. Tiny's toys, Welcome to G&G, we are glad to have you aboard. It appears that you have a 38 Military & Police Model of 1905-4th change snubbie. M14man appears to be correct on the year, 1941, made just before the war broke out. This revolver eventually, with transitional changes, became the model 10 in 1957 You should have a one line address on the right side, 'Made in USA', five screws, long hammer throw. What is written on the barrel? S & W emblem on right side? The front sight is a transitional blade, a half penny ramp, seen on post war models.

Very neat and unique snubbie you have Tiny! Firearms made just before and just after the war have 'transitional flavors', very cool.

Send more pictures with the hammer drawn back. You should check the cylinder face and under the barrel above the ejector rod for the serial number also.
