I read John Mauldin’s weekly missives; he excels at providing information from many influential economists, analysts and policy makers. I don’t often agree with much of what I read, but I have found it worth reading – it helps to know what the movers and shakers think, and it is always good to gather different views. The world’s most exclusive club has eighteen members. They gather every other month on a Sunday evening at 7 p.m. In conference room E in a circular tower block whose tinted windows overlook the central Basel railway station. Their discussion lasts for one hour, perhaps an hour and a half. Some of those present bring a colleague with them, but the aides rarely speak during this most confidential of conclaves.

But this is called a black eye in medialand’s headlines. Two loud, cursing teenagers did not know how to conduct themselves in a public place. A woman asked them to behave like civilized people. What they had not learned at home or in public school could not be restored in a movie theater. Nobody tells them what to do.

Especially nobody white. They left the screening room, and they jumped her when she left the theater. They beat her up. This was no spur-of-the-moment attack.

The woman has said that she can pick them out of a line-up. She is going to press charges. The article ran photos of two teenagers. Let us hope they are located, tried, and convicted. It is a shame that the “except” clause of Article XIII, Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution has never been imposed by the courts. It would have saved a lot of taxpayers’ money.

It also would have emptied the prisons. Restitution to the victim is called for. What we get is suspended sentences with no permanent record for teenage hoodlums, and prisons that cost from per year for adults — all at taxpayers’ expense. Victims lose.

Taxpayers lose. Bureaucrats win. Younger hoodlums learn lifetime trades from older professionals. Conservatives say: “Lock ‘em up, and throw away the key.” I say: “Article XIII, Section 1″ and “victim’s rights.” I even wrote a book on this.

‘Only connect’ – such were the famous (almost) concluding words of E. Forster’s novel, Howard’s Way. I think if Forster were alive today and still writing, he would end the book differently: ‘Only disconnect.’ It is very difficult to disconnect these days, psychologically if not physically.

Although I think that the so-called social media would be much better and more accurately called the anti-social media (for which of us has not seen and remarked upon four people at a restaurant table ignoring each other and glued to their little screens?), I cannot claim myself to be so very different from my modern fellow men. If I am separated from my telephone or the internet for more than a few hours I grow anxious, principally that I will have missed the transformative offer of my life – not that I experience my life as being in such great need of transformation. Still, a change is as good as a rest.

It is difficult to isolate yourself these days, though I know one or two admirable people who refuse to use the internet and have no mobile phones. I assume that they are resisting temptation, but perhaps they are not tempted in the first place. This raises the important question as to whether it is more morally admirable to be so perfect as not to be tempted by something, or to be perfect enough to be tempted by it but to resist. Be that as it may, I have all but forgotten how wonderful it was to be out of contact with the people I knew (and liked) for quite long periods, sometimes for months. There was something luxurious about it; I was able to luxuriate in a certain lack of responsibility, for I heard no complaints and therefore had to suggest no solutions.

The Justice Department finally gave up its search and said it was all a mistake— that there was never any credible evidence of a John Doe #2 being involved. That reversal demonstrates a pattern of cover-up by authorities and limited media coverage in the years since the crime. Tian Haisu has an unconventional method for applying paint to a surface - she uses roller skates! The artist wears a modified pair of inline riders that are adapted to hold small pots of black pigment. Her giant works - sometimes as large as 43 feet by 20 feet - mimic traditional Chinese landscape painting.

But, by making marks with skates instead of calligraphy brushes, the ancient art takes on a whole new life. Tian calls this unique process 'landskating.' The artist started painting when she was just three years old, and now she's currently a student at the California College of Art. Wearing her skates while she works make her feel at one with each piece.

There are many unethical instructors out there who will “sell” you a Black Belt after just a short period of training. My fellow martial artist and friend, Tom Saviano, knows of one such school just down the street from him. For $1,500.00 this so-called “instructor” will guarantee you that you’ll become a Black Belt within a year or so. To better understand the efficacy of maoto for the treatment of influenza, a randomized trial was conducted for comparison with oseltamivir or zanamivir. Adult patients with influenza symptoms, including fever, positive for quick diagnostic kit for influenza within 48 h of fever onset were assessed for enrollment. The data of 28 patients randomly assigned to maoto (n = 10), oseltamivir (n = 8), or zanamivir (n = 10) were analyzed for the duration of fever (>37.5°C) and total symptom score from symptom cards recorded by the patient. Viral isolation and serum cytokine measurements were also done on days 1, 3, and 5. Maoto granules, a commercial medical dosage form, are made from four plants: Ephedra Herb, Apricot Kernel, Cinnamon Bark, and Glycyrrhiza Root.Median durations of fever of patients assigned maoto, oseltamivir, or zanamivir were 29, 46, or 27 h, respectively, significantly different for maoto and oseltamivir.

No significant between-group differences were found in total symptom score among three groups. This study includes 172 patients of either gender, above 18 years of age, belonging to different nationalities admitted to A1- Noor specialist hospital, Holly Makkah, KSA.RESULTS: A total of 172 patients with male to female ratio 1.54:1 were admitted from 1st March, 2007 to 31st May, 2008 with complicated and non-healing diabetic foot ulcers. Out of these 172 patients, 135 (78.48%) were Saudi and 37 (21.52%) were non Saudi residents with ratio of 3.6:1. After admission and resuscitation, all the patients under went early surgical debridement and dressing with the thick layer of honey locally available. Wounds became healthy within 7-35 days.

Three patients (1.75%) underwent big toe amputation and 2 (1.16%) patients under.went below knee amputations. Twenty (11.6%) patients under went split skin grafting to cover the wound while in other patients wound healed by secondary intention.CONCLUSION: Use of honey significantly reduced rate of amputation and improve wound healing when used for wound dressing in chronic diabetic foot ulcers. The objective of this double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial was to investigate the effects of broccoli sprouts powder (BSP) on some oxidative stress parameters in type 2 diabetes patients.SUBJECTS/METHODS: A total of 81 patients with type 2 diabetes were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups for 4 weeks. The groups received either 10 g/d BSP (n=27), 5 g/d BSP (n=29) or placebo (n=25). Serum total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI), malondialdehyde (MDA) and oxidized low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol were measured at baseline and at 4 weeks after treatment.RESULTS: In all, 63 patients in three groups were included in the analysis: 10 g/d BSP (n=21), 5 g/d (n=22) and placebo (n=20).

After 4 weeks, consumption of BSP resulted in significant decrease in MDA (P=0.001 for treatment effect), oxidized low density lipoprotein cholesterol (P=0.03 for treatment effect), OSI (P=0.001 for treatment effect) and significant increase in TAC (P=0.001 for treatment effect). Hot flashes are the most common climacteric symptom and a major cause of suffering in postmenopausal women. Licorice is one of the plants that is used to relieve menopausal symptoms. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of licorice on hot flash symptoms in menopausal women. The participants of this randomized, double blind, clinical trial study were 60 menopausal women randomly allocated to licorice or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) groups. The participants in this trial received licorice (1140 mg/day) or HRT (a conjugated estrogen 0.312 mg/day and Medroxyprogesterone 2.5 mg/day) for 90 days.

In this study we observed that licorice is not very different from hormones in terms of reducing the number and duration of hot flashes, but that HRT can reduce the severity of hot flashes significantly better than licorice can. In addition, there was no significant difference between age, education level, marital status, occupation, income, number of pregnancies, time from cessation of menstruation, and severity of hot flashes in the two groups. Abstract: OBJECTIVE: A significant correlation exists between coronary artery diseases and depression. The aim of this trial was to compare the efficacy and safety of saffron versus fluoxetine in improving depressive symptoms of patients who were suffering from depression after performing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).METHODS: In this randomized double-blind parallel-group study, 40 patients with a diagnosis of mild to moderate depression who had undergone PCI in the last six months were randomized to receive either fluoexetine (40mg/day) or saffron (30mg/day) capsule for six weeks. Participants were evaluated by Hamilton depression rating scale (HDRS) at weeks 3 and 6 and the adverse events were systemically recorded.RESULTS: By the study endpoint, no significant difference was detected between two groups in reduction of HDRS scores (P=0.62). Remission and response rates were not significantly different as well (P=1.00 and P=0.67; respectively). When you experience the deeper dimensions of Mindfulness you stop and at the same time you exit from your personal history and give up searching. It means that you divert your attention from the world of forms and shapes, and you no longer wish to find yourself in the world of forms. Stopping is the consequence of a shift of attention within your Consciousness.

Stopping does not mean the stoppage of your mind, as you have assumed previously. Some of suggest that stoppage is equal to emptying the mind, usually through various, forced exercises. The mind will, naturally, stop, but you will not need to impose it on yourself by spiritual exercises, as it will be the consequence of the shift of attention in your consciousness. How does this shift take place? It is not something one is able to force or impose upon them; no effort is capable of achieving that.. That is when you experience something from the deeper dimensions of Mindfulness. This is not something that may only occur to the chosen few.

Neural stem cells (NSCs) hold promise as a treatment of hearing loss caused by neural damage. However, the biological functions of GBE in modulating NSC behaviors in the cochlea are still largely elusive. In this study, we sought to explore the effects of GBE on the differentiation and performance of NSCs from mouse cochlea. Our data showed that GBE treatment promotes cell survival and NSC proliferation. In addition, GBE treatment also increases NSC differentiation to neurons and enhances the performance of mature neural networks evident by the increased frequency of calcium oscillation.

Moreover, neurite outgrowth is also dramatically increased upon GBE treatment. Overall, our study demonstrates the positive regulatory role of GBE in NSC proliferation and differentiation into functional neurons in vitro, supporting the potential therapeutic use of GBE in hearing loss recovery. Recently we demonstrated that decreasing a key neuroinflammatory cytokine IL-1beta in the hippocampus of aged rats reversed the age-related cognitive decline and increased neurogenesis in the age rats. We also have found that nutraceuticals have the potential to reduce neuroinflammation, and decrease oxidative stress. The objectives of this study were to determine if spirulina could protect the proliferative potential of hippocampal neural progenitor cells from an acute systemic inflammatory insult of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). To this end, young rats were fed for 30 days a control diet or a diet supplemented with 0.1% spirulina.

On day 28 the rats were given a single i.p. Injection of LPS (1 mg/kg). The following day the rats were injected with BrdU (50 mg/kg b.i.d. I.p.) and were sacrificed 24 hours after the first injection of BrdU.
